MULTICULTURAL MUSIC FESTIVAL SET FOR MINNEAPOLIS JUNE 27-30
02-139-AW*

CHICAGO (ELCA) -- A Multicultural Music Festival will be held
June 27-30 at Concordia University, St. Paul, Minn. The theme, "One
Voice, Many Cultures," focuses on how to incorporate music from
different cultures into congregational worship.
The Multicultural Music Festival is organized by the Commission
for Multicultural Ministries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America (ELCA). The event is the first of its kind on a national
level, said Rosemary Dyson, associate executive director for the
Commission for Multicultural Ministries.
The festival, geared for children and adults, will include a
series of workshops and concerts that reflect diversity in culture
and music. The workshops and concerts will cover topics such as
blues, gospel, and Arab music, African hymns, salsa and Hmong dance,
and a traditional Native American flutist.
Two culture-specific worship services will be held each day,
such as African American, African, Latino, American Indian and Alaska
Native, Arab and Middle Eastern, and Asian and Pacific Islander.
"This event is different from what we usually do," said Dyson.
"This event celebrates music from many different cultures. It's a
musical event, not a structured 'keynote speaker' type event."
The Multicultural Music Festival is made possible through a
grant from the Aid Association for Lutherans/Lutheran Brotherhood
(AAL/LB), a fraternal benefit society that provides insurance
coverage, financial products and services and fraternal benefits to
its members.
