                    COORDINATING COMMITTEE APPOINTED FOR
ARCHDIOCESAN ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY ?
                       TASK SUBCOMMITTEES ESTABLISHED

New York, NY ? His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, Primate of the Greek
Orthodox Church in America, recently announced the appointment of a central
coordinating committee to organize and plan the work of the Archdiocesan
Advisory Committee on Science and Technology (AACST). The members of the
Coordinating Committee include Dr. Achilles G. Adamantiades, who will serve
as Executive Secretary, Dr. Costas Efthymiou, Associate Executive
Secretary, Dr. Christos Mantzoros, Dr. Vassiliki Boussiotis, Dr. David
Doukas, Dr. Aristotelis Papanikolaou, Dr. Michael Polymeropoulos, and Dr.
Hari Doumanidis.

In advancing the crucial work of the AACST, the Coordinating Committee met
recently in New York with Archbishop Demetrios. At this meeting a number
of issues were addressed and actions taken regarding the structure and work
of the AACST. The following three subcommittees were formalized and
coordinators were appointed for each one of them: 1) Bioethics and Medical
Issues, coordinated by Dr. Christos Mantzoros, 2) Economics, Energy,
Environment, Population, and Natural Resources, coordinated by Dr. Achilles
G. Adamantiades, and 3) Natural Sciences and Modern Technologies,
coordinated by Dr. Hari Doumanidis. Appointments to the sub-committees are
being made with every effort to include professionals in all of these areas
who are committed to assisting the work of the Church. In the coming
months, the subcommittees will propose agendas for topics of discussion as
they relate to the concerns of the Church.

In addition, the Coordinating Committee established a program of meetings
that will include regional gatherings of committee members with the
Archbishop, a formal meeting at the 36th Biennial Clergy Laity Congress in
Los Angeles (scheduled on Tuesday, July 2nd), and a national meeting of all
members of the AACST which has been tentatively scheduled on October 18-19,
2002, at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, MA.
This meeting will provide a forum for the discussion, planning, and
establishing of the program of each subcommittee, as well as the broader
agenda and function of the AACST.
