Calling All JYAs: You know who you are

by Midge Mack

COLUMBUS, OH-If you are one, you know that a JYA is someone who has experienced a Junior Year Abroad.

The program for third-year college students was founded by Margaret Flory, who is in Columbus looking for alumni and alumnae of the program to join her and another JYA enthusiast, the Rev. Bruce Rigdon, a Detroit-area pastor, in planning the 50th anniversary of the program next year.

Flory, who spent a 36-year career working for various mission agencies of the former United Presbyterian Church (UPC) at "475," as the UPC's New York City headquarters was known. The co-founder of JYA was the Rev. Syngman Rhee, a former PC(USA) moderator. Initially it was a program for Presbyterians; later it was opened up to all collegians.

Flory also is a co-founder, with the Rev. Ray Kiely, of the Ecumenical Parish Program in the Synod of the Covenant. That program has been operating for 26 years.

Former JYAs are requested to register with the Stony Point Conference Center in the Congregational Ministries Division booth (No. 316), in the GA exhibit hall.
