Committee wants change in energy policy

by Midge Mack

COLUMBUS, OH-The General Assembly's committee on national issues wants the denomination to change its policies on energy in the light of current national and international concerns about production, consumption, cost, distribution and security.

The committee acted in response to an overture from Susquehanna Valley Presbytery calling for Presbyterian Church (USA) institutions to reduce energy consumption. Committee members pointed out that current church policies are more than 20 years old.

Confusion and extensive debate about "takings" clouded discussion of an overture from Baltimore Presbytery about government acquisitions of private property and restrictions on its use. The overture, which was approved, asks for a study of the issue and formulation of policy on the complex matter.

The committee approved Overture 44 from the Presbytery of Tampa Bay, calling on Presbyterians to support a national boycott of Taco Bell restaurants and products until tomato growers and Taco Bell agree to negotiate with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers about working and living conditions.

Financial implications of this action include funding of a half-time position and expenses to provide educational resources about the boycott.
