Taiwanese Elected President of North American Denomination

    The Reformed Church in America (RCA), a denomination of
nominal Dutch heritage rooted in the USA since 1628, installed
the Rev. John Chang (Tiu* Geng-siong) as president of its General

Synod on June 11th. He will serve in the position for one year.
Rev. Chang was born and educated in Taiwan.  He is a graduate
of Tainan Theological College and Seminary here.  He is the
first Asian to serve as the denomination's president.
    In his acceptance speech he thanked the previous two synod
presidents for their help to him as he as learned the nature of
the
position.  He pledged to carry out his duties in a spirit of
prayer,
and asked all present to pray for the synod, the denomination
and for him.
    Mr. Chang currently serves as the senior pastor of Grace
Christian Church (RCA) on Staten Island in New York City.
This church has grown from an initial gathering of five Taiwanese

families twenty years ago to hundreds of members today.  He
thanked the RCA for encouraging and supporting his congregation's

growth, and challenged the church to show a similar openness
to all groups.
