Grants available to help churches
reach immigrants through children

"Seed money" grants of up to $5,000 each are available to Lutheran
Church--Missouri Synod urban congregations that are interested in reaching
out to immigrants through programs for children.

The "Reaching New Immigrants through Children" program is funded by a
$75,000 grant from the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.

Also providing support for the program is Concordia Publishing House, which
will offer free craft, Sunday school and other resource materials, and
Lutheran Hour Ministries, which will offer promotional materials and
evangelism training.

"In the urban setting, people are really struggling with what to do with
their children" after school and in the summer, while parents are working,
according to Rev. Yohannes Mengsteab, facilitator for new African immigrant
and urban ministries with LCMS World Mission. "Parents will really
appreciate a children's program that is safe."

Mengsteab said he hopes the grants program will lead to "ongoing ministries
in which we are able to connect suburban and rural congregations with city
ministries."

For more information about the "Reaching New Immigrants through Children"
program, contact Mengsteab at (800) 433-3954, Ext. 1336 or
yohannes.mengsteab@lcms.org. Deadline for applications is Oct. 30.
