FORT WORTH, July 18, 2002 -- The Central Pastoral Office
for Hispanic Ministries (CPOHM) hosted an educational
retreat for licensed ministers, June 8 - 14, at Brite
Divinity School, Fort Worth, Texas. Thirty-six active and
prospective ministers, representing seven regions of the
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States
and Canada participated in the event. During the retreat,
participants took two short courses, one on the history
and theology of the Disciples and another on basic
principles of biblical interpretation.

This retreat addressed a growing need of both Hispanic
Disciples and Disciples at-large: the continued education
of Hispanic Licensed Ministers. The number of Hispanic
Licensed Ministers is growing quickly, given the sustained
growth of Hispanic Ministries and the rapid pace of
Hispanic church planting. The group was heterogeneous;
uniting life-long Disciples with ministers newly arrived to
our denomination.

The retreat began Saturday, June 8th, with a banquet at
Brite Divinity School. On Sunday morning, the group
worshiped at Camino de Paz, the local Hispanic Disciples
congregation led by Rev. Gilbert Marez, Jr. That afternoon,
the group began the course on Principles of Biblical
Interpretation, taught by Dr. Pablo A. Jiminez, National
Pastor for Hispanic Ministries. Dr. Jiminez is a former
Instructor of Homiletics at the Episcopal Theological
Seminary of the Southwest, Austin, Texas. Dr. Daisy
Machado, professor of
Church History at Brite Divinity School, taught the course
on History and Theology of the Disciples. Closing worship,
led by Rev. Carmen R. Fernandez, CPOHM's Staff Associate,
took place at the Brite's Chapel on Thursday, June 13.

The CPOHM thanks Dr. Daisy Machado and Brite Divinity
School for hosting and supporting this important event
which was made possible from a grant of the Mission
Imperative fund.
