Bishops' Appeal responds to drought in Southern Africa

[The Church of Ireland Gazette] Bishops' Appeal has sent 20,000 to relieve
the hunger currently afflicting Southern Africa. Six countries in the
region - Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe - are
suffering food shortages as a result of the worst drought in a decade. The
World Food Programme estimates that 12.5 million people will need help until
the harvest in April next year. Bishops' Appeal will continue to monitor the
need through its partners, Christian Aid and Tearfund, each of whom has
received 10,000.

Bishops' Appeal has made a further grant to assist rebuilding in
Afghanistan. Its partner, SAFE, has received $39,000 to fund vocational
training in Shalman refugee camps.
