Presbyterian communicators to commune

September event will feature address by ethics-in-media expert

by John Filiatreau

LOUISVILLE - Fifty to 100 men and women who communicate for and about the Presbyterian Church (USA) will gather here Sept. 13-14 for the fall meeting of the Presbyterian Communicators' Partnership (PCP).

The featured speaker for the event is John Ferre, Ph.D., a professor of communications at the University of Louisville, who also has a Master of Divinity degree from the University of Chicago. A recognized authority on ethics, media and public relations, Ferre will address the PCP on Sept. 14 on the theology of communications.

Ferre, who received a distinguished teaching professor award from U of L in 2001, is a co-host of the fourth annual International Conference on Media, Religion and Culture, sponsored by the Louisville Institute, which will take place in Louisville in September 2004. He also is a member of the board of the Louisville chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

The events of Sept. 13 will take place at the Presbyterian Center, while the next day's program will be at the Courtyard Hotel by Marriott at Second and Main streets.

Friday's sessions will be devoted to a discussion of how communication services may affect Presbyterian Church (USA) programs and missions for 2003. Participants in the daylong discussion will include leaders of the General Assembly Council's ministries divisions and of the Office of the General Assembly. Presbyterian News Service staff will act as moderators.

The highlights of Saturday's sessions will be Ferre's address and a presentation, "What does a Presbyterian Congregation Look Like," by Cynthia Woolever of the PC(USA)'s department of research services. She is the director of the U.S. Congregational Life Survey, the largest-ever examination of U.S. faith groups and worshipers.

The PCP is a network of staff and volunteer communicators from across the denomination, including people working for presbytery, synod and national offices. Anyone who works in communications on behalf of the PC(USA) is welcome to attend.

To register for program events or get more information, call Aline Simpson toll-free at the Presbyterian Center at (888) 728-7228, ext. 5137. To make hotel arrangements, call the Courtyard Hotel by Marriott at (800) 321-2211 by Aug. 22; be sure to mention the PC(USA) or PCP.
