PC(USA) Pastors' salaries still on the rise

Median for ministers serving churches rose 2.9 percent last year

LOUISVILLE - The mean average salary of Presbyterian Church (USA) pastors serving congregations rose 3 percent last year to $46,170.

The median average - which is less influenced by very high and very low salaries - climbed 2.9 percent in 2001, to $43,200.

The annual salary study was released last week by the Board of Pensions. The figures are based on "effective salary," as reported by the congregations to the board and are calculated on May 1 of each year. Effective salary includes cash salary, manse value or housing allowance and deferred compensation.

The highest mean salary - as in each of at least the last five years - was paid in the Synod of Southern California and Hawaii: just more than $54,000. The highest rate of increase - more than 22 percent - occurred in the Synod of the Pacific.

The lowest average salary ($18,817) and the slowest rate of salary increase (7.1 percent) occurred in the Synodo Boriquen en Puerto Rico.
