Upon his retirement from public office, Taiwan's former
president, Dr. Lee Teng-hui, expressed a desire to become an
evangelist among Taiwan's aboriginal people. On the evening of
August 19th, at an anniversary celebration of the Paiwan
Presbytery of the PCT, he shared his personal faith testimony.
He spoke of how Christians must respond to the call of God and
exert themselves for the creation of a just and righteous society
in Taiwan.
The Paiwan Presbytery held celebrations on the 19th and 20th.
The evening meeting, at which Dr. Lee spoke, was entitled "A Date
With Our Ancestors." In his speech he laid special emphasis on
his desire to show care for his aboriginal compatriots through
the church. He challenged the presbytery to become a center of
living faith. He suggested that one form of living faith would
be found in the manner in which the presbytery's churches and
their members would, in ways appropriate to their aboriginal
culture, guide their youth through the problems of education.
Though current churches' aid to their members' life is limited,
the church still has much to offer. He trusts in the potential
for church proclamation to be wide and accommodating.
