Coals to Newcastle? Exhibition about the C of E comes to Canterbury

An exhibition, "Anglicanism and the Western Christian Tradition: Continuity
and Change" will be held between 10th-29th September 2002 in the Chapter
House of Canterbury Cathedral. This interesting exhibition, mounted by the
staff of Norwich Cathedral, was originally displayed at the Vatican Museum
in Rome during the Summer of 2002, and was the first exhibition in the
Vatican about a non Roman Catholic denomination. It traces the story of
Christianity in England from the earliest times and the beginnings of the
Church of England and its work up to the present day. The 21 panels are an
excellent review and many are of particular relevance to Canterbury. The
arrival of St Augustine in the 6th Century, the establishment of a
Benedictine community, together with the witness of many Archbishops of
Canterbury is well illustrated.

With its strong commitment to the Benedictine ideals of worship, prayer and
hospitality, Canterbury Cathedral will be hosting the exhibition timed to
mark the thanksgiving for the Ministry of Dr. George Carey in his service to
the worldwide Anglican Communion and to Christian Unity. The Dean of
Canterbury, the Very Revd Robert Willis, said today "This exhibition shows
the strong links that exist between Canterbury and Rome, links which have
been strengthen by recent Archbishops of Canterbury, especially George
Carey. We look forward to even closer co-operation in the future."
