American Baptist News Service (9/25/02)--The Lilly Foundation has awarded
$1,959,600 to the American Baptist Churches USA Ministers Council for its
Together in Ministry project.

The grant is one of 47 funded as part of Lilly's national program
"Sustaining Excellence in the Pastoral Ministry."

According to the Council's executive director, the Rev. Dr. Kate Harvey, the
Together in Ministry project seeks to further the stated mission of the
Ministers Council in fulfillment of the call of II Timothy 1:6 "to fan into
flame the gift of God." Harvey noted, "The Council through the regional
Ministers Councils will develop collegial covenant groups among American
Baptist ministerial leaders for the deepening of spiritual formation, the
strengthening of pastoral effectiveness, and the enhancing of collegial
relationships."

The grant, she said, will go primarily to fund peer group facilitators and
to participants to cover the cost of monthly meetings over four years.	In
addition the Ministers Council will fund regional Council retreats and will
participate in the funding of a national conference for ministerial leaders.
