Mission Initiative panel named

14-member group takes on challenge of raising $40 million

by Alexa Smith

LOUISVILLE - The 14-member steering committee charged with organizing the $40
million campaign to raise funds for Presbyterian Church (USA) mission was
named Saturday.

In announcing the makeup of the committee, John Detterick, executive director
of the General Assembly Council, said its handling of the Mission Initiative
is "critically important" to the future of PC(USA) missions.

The co-chairs of the panel are Lucimarian Roberts and Bill Saul.

The Million Initiative funds will be used for new-church development, church
redevelopment and the hiring of overseas missionaries.

The 12 additional members are Tim Hart-Anderson, of Minnesota; Joanna Adams,
Illinois; Edmundo Vasquez, New Mexico; John Huffman, California; Melva
Costen, Georgia; Youngil Cho, North Carolina; Al Puryear, Virginia; Erin
Cox-Holmes, Pennsylvania; Letty Owings, Washington; Fred Denson, New York;
Chuck Ford, California; and John Williams, Kansas.

One position on the committee remains unfilled.
The members were named during the GAC's fall meeting here, during which its
more than 70 members developed its strategic goals, based on the six Great
Ends of the Church, which are written in the denomination's constitution.

The Great Ends are: The proclamation of the Gospel for the salvation of
humankind; the shelter, nurture and spiritual fellowship of the children of
God; the maintenance of Divine Worship; the preservation of the truth; the
promotion of social righteousness; and the exhibition of the kingdom of
Heaven to the world.

Detterick said the Great Ends have "resonance" in the wider church. In the
ongoing synod and presbytery consultations undertaken by himself and the Rev.
Clifton Kirkpatrick, the PC(USA)'s stated clerk, the subject most often
discussed is mission, not any of the controversial issues facing the church,
he said.

"When we ask, 'Where is God leading you?,' what people want to talk about is
mission," he said.

The council tentatively approved a document articulating its vision for
pursuing each of its goals. The draft will go to staff project teams, which
will develop specific strategies that the GAC will be asked to approve during
its January meeting.
