Education Sunday for the Academic Year 2002-3

[The Church of England] As the academic year gets under way, Churches are
publishing resources for Education Sunday 2003. For more than a hundred
years, this special Sunday has been recognised, in England and Wales, as a
national day of prayer and celebration for everyone in the world of
education. Next year, Education Sunday will be 16 February.

The material, put together by an ecumenical steering group, focuses on the
role of the teacher for its theme of Teaching is for Life. With the
continuing awareness of the need to recruit more teachers in many parts of
the country, the message is that, for Christians, teaching can be a
particularly fulfilling way of following Christ's call, in which faith can
be integrated into a professional role. Teachers, it claims, have the
privilege to be a power for good in society and can be a life-enhancing
influence.

Churches will shortly be circulating leaflets to their schools and
congregations. The denominations involved are the Baptist Union, Church of
England, Roman Catholic Church, Methodist Church, Salvation Army, United
Reformed Church and the Church in Wales.
