Ron Lundeen chosen to head Mission Initiative staff

Presbyterian minister led successful campaign at San Francisco Seminary

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - A major piece of the Presbyterian Church (USA)'s $40 million
Mission Initiative fell into place this week with the announcement that the
Rev. Ronald A. Lundeen has been chosen to direct the fundraising campaign.

Lundeen retired last June as vice president for advancement at San Francisco
Theological Seminary (SFTS) after completing a successful $11.5 million
capital campaign there. The campaign exceeded its goal by several million
dollars.

"I'm thrilled with the opportunity to serve the church in this way," Lundeen
said. "I'm particularly interested in the opportunity individuals have to
share their abundance and invest it in the work of the church."

The Mission Initiative was overwhelmingly approved by this year's General
Assembly. It is designed to raise funds for additional overseas missionaries
and for new church development and church redevelopment, particularly among
racial ethnic and new immigrant populations.

One of Lundeen's first tasks when he begins work in January will be to
recruit the rest of the staff team for the five-year campaign. Initial
targets for the campaign are major donors including individuals and
congregations.

The Mission Initiative Steering Committee was appointed by the General
Assembly Council last month. It's co-chairs are Lucimarian Roberts of Biloxi,
MS, and Bill Saul of Long Beach, CA.

"Ron Lundeen's as good as it gets," said Saul, who worked with Lundeen as a
trustee at SFTS. "He's very good at establishing relationships that are
genuine. He's also a good teacher. The people we bring on to work with him
will learn a lot from him."

Roberts said she was pleased to have found "a person of Ron Lundeen's
expertise and dedication."

Lundeen is chief executive of Northwest Development Counselors in Scottsdale,
AZ, the consulting firm he founded in 1986. A 1979 graduate of SFTS, he
doubled the number of annual donors to the seminary during his seven years on
the staff there.

Lundeen has also worked as a development officer for Luther College in
Decorah, IA; for Luther-Northwestern Seminary in St. Paul, MN; and for the
former Lutheran Church in America when it was based in New York City. His
consulting firm has worked with more than 100 organizations in the United
States, Europe and Asia. In 2000, Lundeen was recognized by National Public
Radio as "a top religious fund raiser in America."

"I am delighted that Ron Lundeen will be joining us and leading the creation
of a funds development office for the General Assembly," said GAC executive
director John Detterick. "Part of the new reality in the church is the need
to find ways of funding the GAC's contribution to the mission of the PC(USA)
and Ron's experience will enable us to do that in a way that will produce
great rewards for the church in the future."
