ABCUSA: Dorothy Wiseman, Retired Missionary in Zaire, Dies

American Baptist News Service (10/29/02)--Dorothy M. Wiseman, retired
American Baptist International Ministries missionary to Zaire (now
Democratic Republic of Congo), died Oct. 26, 2002.  She was 86.

Wiseman was appointed to medical ministry in the Belgian Congo in 1942 by
the Woman's American Baptist Foreign Mission Society.  She served in mission
centers at Vanga, Kikongo, Boko, Nsona Mangu, Sona Bata and Moanza, managing
75-to-150-bed hospitals often without the assistance of a doctor.

In 1960 she was assigned to the Evangelical Medical Institute in Kimpese,
where she was in charge of the operating room, taught courses in the nursing
school and supervised women's work.  The facility included a 350-bed
hospital and training school for nurses and other medical workers, as well
as educational programs for public health officers, midwives, laboratory
technicians and other paramedical workers.  

Wiseman later served as director of the Guest House and Private Hospital, a
division of the Medical Institute at Kimpese. 

She retired in 1981 and moved to Oregon with her sister, Doris.  

In recent years she was an active member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church in
Lake Oswego, Oreg. A memorial service will be held there 3 p.m. Nov. 9. 

She is survived by a brother, Milton Wiseman, 444 Prescott Ave. #101, El
Cajon, CA 92020.
