Correction

In a story about the recent meeting of the Theological Task Force on the
Peace, Unity and Purity of the Church (story #02425, Oct. 29), the
Presbyterian News Service incorrectly reported that "a number of church
officials in Northern New England (Presbytery) are openly defying
constitutional provisions" around ordination standards.

In 1998, the session of Christ Presbyterian Church in Burlington, VT, adopted
a resolution of dissent from G-6.0106b (the commonly called "fidelity and
chastity" provision of the Book of Order). In 2000, the General Assembly
Permanent Judicial Commission instructed Northern New England Presbytery to
"work pastorally" with the Burlington session. Just prior to this year's
General Assembly, the Burlington session "set aside" the dissent resolution.
Shenango Presbytery overtured the General Assembly to find the Burlington
session's action "inadequate" and to force it to "rescind" the resolution.
The Assembly rejected the overture.

Northern New England Presbytery has ruled that the Christ Church session is
in compliance with the Book of Order.
