Pulitzer Prize-winner from Kansas City to be honored at Denver GA

Presbyterian Writers Guild

LOUISVILLE - Bill Tammeus, editorial and feature writer for the Kansas City
Star, will receive the 2003 David Steele Distinguished Writer Award (DWA)
from the Presbyterian Writers Guild at the group's annual luncheon at the
215th General Assembly in Denver next May.

The DWA is given annually to recognize the accumulative work and influence of
a Presbyterian writer.

Tammeus has worked for the Star since 1970 as a reporter, columnist and
editorial board member. He was a member of the Star's staff that won the
Pulitzer Prize for local reporting on the collapse of skywalks that killed
more than 100 people at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City.

His column, "Starbeams," was syndicated for 10 years by the New York Times
and is currently syndicated by Knight-Ridder.

Tammeus' first book, A Gift of Meaning, was published by the University of
Missouri Press in 2001. It is a collection of columns which center on the
meaning of people, places, objects and life's transitions - birth, weddings,
death. He will reflect on that theme at the guild's luncheon in a talk he has
entitled, "Eyes to See and Ears to Hear: Writing that Offers the Gift of
Meaning."
