ABCUSA: Biennial Award Recipients Announced

American Baptist News Service (11/16/02)--The Board of National Ministries,
meeting in Valley Forge, Pa., in semiannual sessions, has announced the
names of the American Baptists who will receive national recognition during
the 2003 American Baptist Biennial Meeting in Richmond, Va. The following
recipients were chosen by the board from nominations submitted by American
Baptist clergy and laity:

* Edwin T. Dahlberg Peace Award - to U.S. Congressman John Lewis of Georgia,
for more than 40 years of work for peace and justice that began with the
Nonviolent Civil Rights Movement and continues in the U.S. national
political arena;

* Jitsuo Morikawa Evangelism Award - to Frank Walton of Martin Luther King
Baptist Church, Renton, Wash., for leadership by a layperson in holistic
evangelism, which includes a gospel radio ministry and youth outreach
program;

* Edward H. Rhoades Urban Ministry Award - to the Rev. Dr. Roberto S.
Miranda, Csngregacion Lesn de Juda, for outstanding leadership that has
resulted in church growth and renovation of the Latino community in the
Greater Boston area;

* Rosa O. Hall Town and Country Award - to the Rev. James E. Sheets, Madison
Baptist Church, Madison, W.V., for more than 50 years of effective, faithful
pastoral leadership in rural church and community ministry;

* New Life Award - to the Rev. Gracie M. Jackson, Eagle River Missionary
Baptist Church, Eagle River, Alaska, for outstanding leadership in
establishing community ministries and new outreach programs.

The Board of National Ministries voted to affirm the following 2003 Biennial
Award nominations by the American Baptist Committee on Chaplains and
Pastoral Counselors:

* Military Chaplain Merit Award - to Chaplain (Colonel) Hugh L. Dukes Jr.,
United States Army;
* Military Chaplain Merit Award - to Captain Alan N. Kieran, Chaplain Corps,
United States Navy;
* Institutional Chaplain Merit Award - to Chaplain Janet R. McCormack,
Denver Seminary, Denver, Colo.;
* Pastoral Counselor Merit Award - to the Rev. Dr. Archie Smith Jr., Pacific
School of Religion, Berkeley, Calif.
