ABCUSA: Beulah McCoy, Retired Missionary in Japan, Dies

American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 11/20/02)--Beulah M. McCoy,
retired American Baptist International Ministries missionary in Japan, died
Oct. 23 in Middletown, R.I.  She was 87. 

She began work in Japan in 1947 following her appointment to missionary
service by The Women's American Baptist Foreign Mission Society.  Most of
her ministry there was centered at the Shokei Girls' School, where she
taught in the English Department for more than 25 years.  She also was
active in the community, serving on committees and boards as well as
teaching English to groups of college alumni, neighborhood housewives and
doctors in the city.  

In 1992 the Order of the Precious Crown, Apricot was conferred on McCoy by
the emperor of Japan for her contributions of educational service in Japan.

Following her retirement in 1980 she held various positions with the
American Baptist Churches of Rhode Island, including service on the Board of
Managers and Mission Support Commission and responsibilities as State White
Cross and World Relief coordinator for American Baptist Women.	She also
served as a tenant representative on the Board of Directors of the John
Clarke Retirement Center.  

A memorial service was held Nov. 16 at the United Baptist Church, Newport,
R.I., where she was a member.  She is survived by a nephew, Roger H. McCoy,
7 Parker Rd., Wellesley, MA 02181.
