2002 RMMO Widow's Mite Award to Friendship Baptist Church

American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 11/20/02)--The Advisory
Council of the Retired Ministers and Missionaries Benefit Board (RMMO),
chaired by the Rev. Dr. Carl Flemister, has selected the Friendship Baptist
Church, Yorba Linda, Calif., to receive the 2002 Widow's Mite Award. The
award will be presented to the church and its founding pastor, the Rev. Dr.
James Carrington, on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, by the Rev. Dr. Perry Hopper,
associate executive director of The Ministers and Missionaries Benefit Board
(MMBB).

Friendship Baptist Church was selected from among American Baptist
congregations that gave $10,000 or more to the RMMO in 2001. The award
commemorates the anonymous gift in 1981 of a Vietnamese refugee woman
worshipping at the First Chinese Baptist Church of Fresno, Calif. Not
knowing the full intent of the offering, but understanding the words "thank
you" printed on the offering envelope, she slipped off her wristwatch, her
only possession of value, and placed it in the envelope.

The RMMO will be received by most American Baptist congregations on Sunday,
Dec. 1, and many will continue receiving contributions throughout the month.
RMMO promotional materials are available from Judson Press by calling
1-800-458-3766. Copies of ABC People magazine-a full-color publication
featuring retired American Baptist ministers and missionaries-are available
from MMBB by calling 1-800-986-6222.
