"We are all the beloved daughters of God!" That's how the
Rev. Lin Ni-ling, General Assembly Program Secretary for Women's
Ministries in the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT),	opened
her remarks at a women's training event held in Kaohsiung City
recently. She urged her hearers to seek spiritual renewal so
that church and society might be blessed. At the same time, she
encouraged her sisters in Christ to boldly respond to God's call
upon them.
The training event, covering two days in mid-November, was
sponsored by the General Assembly and two local presbyteries.
Approximately 90 women took part. Lectures and workshops
examined "Reading the Bible from a Women's Point of View", "The
Call and Mission of Christ", "Women and Finance" , "Labour Law
and Gender Equality in the Workplace" and "A Biblical Perspective
on Leadership."
Rev. Lin said that the General Assembly Women's Ministry
Committee is emphasizing Women's empowerment training through the
publication of a handbook, Women Advancing Together. It
introduces spiritual formation, human resource training,
education, ecumenism, gender equality and other topics. The
handbook also includes instructions for structuring women's
training and leadership events. She hopes that it can be put to
use in women's groups at all levels of the church.
In a time of economic uncertainty, many women are in need of
training for managing financial affairs. Elder Lin En-rao, the
chairman of the board of the Kaohsiung Christian Family
Counseling Centre, spoke on the subject. He said, "A Christian's
financial management attitude should be to economize, save, and
contribute." He said that a Christian can "love wealth" but
should not "covet wealth".
Ms. Chen Chin-bin, a lawyer and member Kaohsiung's independent
Train Station Church, suggested the model of a wandering gossip
for spreading the word of labour law and regulations concerning
gender equality among women. She said, "The gender equality in
the workplace law came into force last June. It prohibits
occupational discrimination based on gender and sexual
harassment. It also meets the needs of women for flexibility
because of childbirth and other eventualities."
A further women's training and empowerment conference has been
scheduled for central Taiwan from January 21 to 23 at the Mt.
Lebanon Conference Centre near Taichung. Registration is made
through the PCT General Assembly Women's Ministries office.
