ABCUSA: Spitzer Named Executive for ABC of New Jersey

American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 1/23/03)-The Rev. Dr. Lee
B. Spitzer, senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Lincoln, Nebr., has
been named executive minister of the American Baptist Churches of New
Jersey.

Spitzer begins his new responsibilities March 1.  He succeeds the Rev. Dr.
A. Roy Medley, who resigned in December 2001 to become general secretary of
American Baptist Churches USA.	Interim leadership for the region has been
provided successively by the Rev. Drs. Lloyd Kenyon, Howard Taylor and Roy
Thompson.  One of 34 regions within American Baptist Churches USA, ABC of
New Jersey includes approximately 268 churches comprising 71,500 members.

Following his election January 19 at a special meeting of ABC of New Jersey
held at First Baptist Church in Mount Holly, Spitzer described his vision
for the future of the region as "Christ-centered, mission focused and
pastoral in spirit." 

A native of Long Island, N.Y., Spitzer grew up in a Jewish family and became
a Christian as a teenager. He attended The Kings College and Fuller Seminary
and received the M.Div. and D.Min. degrees from Gordon Conwell Theological
Seminary.  

Spitzer has held pastorates at First Baptist Church, East Providence, R.I.;
Seaview Baptist Church, Linwood, N.J.; and First Baptist Church, Lincoln,
Nebr. 

Spitzer's wife, Dr. Lois Spitzer, is a professor of English as a second
language and linguistics at the University of Nebraska. They have two
teenage children, Joshua and Larisa.
