ABCUSA: Jose Camacho, Hispanic Church Leader, Dies

American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 1/28/03)--Word has been
received of the death last week of the Rev. Dr. Jose D. Camacho, a longtime
American Baptist leader in local church, national and international Hispanic
ministries.

Camacho served for many years as pastor of Primera Iglesia Bautista in
Caguas, Puerto Rico.  He later staffed the organization Ministerios
Cristianos in that city.

In the U.S. he provided leadership as Hispanic coordinator for the American
Baptist Churches of Los Angeles.  He also served as an associate evangelist
to Latin America for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.  

Camacho held the B.A. degree in philosophy from the University of Puerto
Rico; the B.Div. degree  from the Graduate School of Theology in Berkeley,
Calif.; and the Ph.D. degree from New York University.	 

The Rev. Eddie Cruz, director of Hispanic Ministries for American Baptist
National Ministries, noted, "We unite with the immediate family and our
brothers and sisters of Puerto Rico in this tremendous loss, and we
recognize that his life and ministry has left an indelible mark in our lives
and the ABC family."
