Four more overseas seminaries to receive academic books

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - Officials of the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation (PPC) and
the Worldwide Ministries Division (WMD) have announced that four more
seminaries overseas have been selected to receive free academic books as part
of the publishing house's "Books without Borders" program.

The addition of Union Theological Seminary in the Philippines, Matanzas
Theological Seminary in Cuba, St. Paul's Theological School in Kenya and the
Protestant Superior Institute for Theological Studies (ISEDET) in Argentina
brings to 24 the number of second- and third-world seminaries to receive
books for their theological libraries, said David Maxwell, WMD's coordinator
for global education and international leader development.

Each seminary in the program receives more than 200 books, valued at more
than $6,000, in such fields as biblical commentary, homiletics (preaching),
church history, doctrine and ethics.

Seminaries are selected on the basis of need, not church affiliation, Maxwell
said. "'Books without Borders' reaches some Presbyterian seminaries," he
said, "but this is truly an ecumenical partnership to promote sound
theological education throughout the world."

PPC president and publisher Davis Perkins said the program was inspired by
then-moderator Freda Gardner in 2000. After visiting schools in central
Europe as moderator, she proposed to Perkins that PPC help replenish
deteriorating and outdated libraries around the world.

"As the only self-sustaining publishing entity in the PC(USA), we are able to
contribute in this way to mission causes around the world," Perkins said.
