McCormick to celebrate move with worship walk

Faculty, staff, students and trustees to parade into seminary's new Hyde Park
home

McCormick Theological Seminary

CHICAGO - With drums and pipes and worshipful words, McCormick Theological
Seminary will celebrate the move to its new headquarters in Chicago's Hyde
Park neighborhood.

The Seminary will celebrate the quarter-mile move with a midday worship walk
on Feb. 27. The McCormick contingent, led by Korean drums and
banner-bearers, will be met by faculty, staff and students from the Lutheran
School of Theology at Chicago. McCormick built its new three-story facility
on the campus it shares with the Lutheran School.

For the past two decades, collaboration has been a hallmark of the two
schools. McCormick and the Lutheran School have shared common classroom space
and library resources since McCormick moved to Hyde Park in 1975.

More recently, the two institutions pooled Lilly Foundation grant money for
upgrading technological resources for instruction and research. The two
schools, who share a joint technology team, also received a three-year,
$505,000 Teagle Foundation grant to explore new ways to share administrative
and physical resources and to encourage and assist neighboring Chicago
seminaries to do the same.

Beyond facilities and resources, this new affiliation intensifies a trend of
interdenominational partnership between theological institutions. In 1998,
the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
agreed to a relationship of "full communion." The agreement, which also
includes the Reformed Church in America and the United Church of Christ,
allows the exchange of ministers and encourages the denominations to share
heritages of worship, service and education.

The new McCormick building will be dedicated Wednesday, May 21. McCormick
will occupy the new facility beginning March 3. Currently, faculty members
hold office hours in a former University of Chicago fraternity house, and the
administrative staff works out of an 80-year-old single family home.

The new address will be McCormick Theological Seminary, 5460 S. University
Ave., Chicago, IL 60615.
