The Board of directors of Taiwan Theological College responded
to a block resignation of 6 faculty members at its February 13th
meeting. According to the board's chairman, Cheng Sin-chin, a
five member ad hoc committee was established to communicate with
the resignees.	The committee's task and boundaries were clearly
set. Mr. Cheng stated for the record that he had never used the
terms "boycott" or "abdication" to characterize the teachers'
action. These terms were attributed to him in The Christian
Tribune on February 14th.
He asserts that the board will seek to solve the matter in
sincerity and goodwill. "If the board would operate by force, the
matter could be settled quickly on the principle of command
because the resigning faculty members' behavior meets the stated
requirements for a "punishible offense".
In addition, he said that the board also would be happy to see
Dr. Cheng Yangen, one of the resignees, promoted to full
professor. The board had discussed the process by which Dr.
Cheng had applied for promotion, and could find no errors. Since
a new board takes office early in March, the current board bound
the decision over to its successor.
When questioned about retaining the resignees in office, Mr.
Cheng said that since their resignation had not followed stated
procedures, they had not actually resigned, so no action had to
be taken on their letter. They remain faculty members. He hopes
that when they have suggestions for the school they will follow
established procedures to submit them.
