Conference to help Lutherans
get involved in mission work
This year's "New Directions in Mission Leadership" conference will take
place April 24-27 at the Marriott Airport Hotel in St. Louis. The annual
gathering, sponsored by LCMS World Mission, is designed to help Lutherans
get involved in mission work, both in their own neighborhoods and overseas.
It is open to congregational mission leaders, members of mission societies,
and anyone interested in mission.
The event's theme will be "Leaving Mission Fingerprints on the World:
Involving Individuals and Congregations in Local and Global Mission."
"Unlike the crime-scene people who look for fingerprints that people did
not plan to leave, we are actively trying to get people to purposely leave
their 'mission fingerprints' everywhere they go," explained conference
organizer Rev. B. Steve Hughey, director for mission partnership and
involvement with LCMS World Mission.
The goal of the conference, he said, is "to help LCMS members and their
congregations become involved in sharing the Good News about Jesus so that
more and more people believe and turn to the Lord'" (Acts 11:20-21).
In addition to Hughey, conference speakers include:
-- George Miley, executive director of Antioch Network, Phoenix, Ariz.;
-- Rev. Greg Seltz, director of ethnic training, Concordia University,
Irvine, Calif.;
-- Rev. Robert Roegner, executive director of LCMS World Mission;
-- Rev. Dwight Marabel, executive director of Missions International,
Memphis, Tenn.;
-- Deacon Khurram Khan, executive director of People of the Book Lutheran
Outreach, Dearborn Heights, Mich.;
-- Donnie Stubblefield, director of youth ministry at St. John's Lutheran
Church, Ellisville, Mo.
Workshops will be offered on a variety of topics, including finding mission
resources, starting a mission-minded youth ministry, working
cross-culturally, reaching Muslims in North America and helping
congregations start new congregations.
Registration, which includes meals, is $135 by April 15 or $150 after that
date. The optional "cross-cultural experience" and meal is an additional
$25. Lodging is available at the conference hotel for $62 per night.
Information about the conference was mailed to congregations in
February. Registration also is available at
