American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 4/2/03)--Hazel Stettner and
Martha Pixley, who were honored by American Baptist Churches USA
respectively in 1995 and 2001 for their "contributions to the life of
Christ's church," died last month.

Both received the Cora and John Sparrowk President's Award, which is
presented biennially to honor American Baptists who "over a period of years
made an exceptional and outstanding contribution to the life of Christ's
church; and in life and service manifest richly the fruits and gifts of the
Spirit."

Hazel Stettner died March 18 at age 87.  She was honored with her husband,
Eric, in 1995 for her leadership at Lake Avenue Baptist Church in Rochester,
N.Y., and her work with American Baptist Women's Ministries, the Fairport
Baptist Home and the American Baptist Churches of New York State.

Martha Courtner Pixley died March 31.  Along with her late husband, the Rev.
William W. Pixley, she served for more than a half century in ministry in
town and country churches throughout Michigan.	At retirement the Pixleys
settled in Kalamazoo, Mich., where she remained involved in a wide range of
ministries and programs at First Baptist Church, including Sunday school,
worship, American Baptist Women's Ministries, leadership roles in local and
regional events, correspondence, and an ongoing prayer vigil for pastors,
missionaries, denominational leaders and others.  Condolences for the family
