3 Presbyterians in public life to be honored as Women of Faith

Trio to be feted at May 25 breakfast

by Evan Silverstein

LOUISVILLE - Three Presbyterian women distinguished by their contributions in
government or other public service will be honored during the upcoming
General Assembly as this year's "Women of Faith."

The three - Eva M. Clayton of North Carolina and Mildred Persinger and
Patricia M. Roach, both of New York - will discuss their work and faith at
the annual Women of Faith Awards Breakfast sponsored by the Women's
Ministries Program Area of the National Ministries Division, May 25 in
Denver, CO.

Clayton is the first woman to be elected from North Carolina to the United
States Congress. A five-term congresswoman and ranking democrat on two
congressional committees, she served as chair of the Congressional Black
Caucus Foundation and is currently serving the United Nations Food and
Agricultural Organization.

Clayton has served on the Committee on Ecumenical Missions and Relations
(UPCUSA), and worked with Self-Development of People (SDOP). In 1997 she
traveled to Debreceen, Hungary as a delegate to the World Alliance of
Reformed Churches. Clayton resides in Littleton, NC.

Persinger has been associated with the National Young Women's Christian
Association (YWCA) and the United Nations (UN). As a member of the Race
Relations Committee of the National YWCA, she joined forces with Dorothy
Height of the National Council of Negro Women to work for passage of the
Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voter Registration act of 1965. She served
as the National YWCA's UN representative and, later, as UN representative of
the World YWCA.

Founder of the International Women's Tribune Center, Persinger served four
years as president of the United Nations Association's Conference on UN
Representatives and has worked with numerous nongovernmental organizations.

In 1975 she served as chairperson for organization and management of the
7,000 participant, two-week forum in Mexico preceding the World Conference of
the International Women's Year. She was also involved in UN women's
conferences in Copenhagen (1980), Nairobi (1985) and Beijing (1995).
Persinger resides in Dobbs Ferry, NY.

Roach is the first woman elected to the Dayton Ohio City Commission. She left
Dayton to work for the United Presbyterian Church (USA) in New York City as
an associate for urban concerns and later served as director of the former
Evangelism and Church Development Ministry Unit of the Presbyterian Church
(USA) in Louisville.

Roach currently serves as special assistant to the president of the Borough
of the Bronx in New York City. She recently opposed the City of New York in
its effort to arrest homeless people who had been given permission by her
church, Fifth Avenue Presbyterian, to spend the night on their steps and in
their doorway. Ms. Roach lives in Riverdale, New York.

The Women of Faith Awards grew out of an awareness of the substantial, yet
often unrecognized contributions of women in the Church and society. During
each General Assembly, the awards are bestowed, sometimes in harmony and
sometimes in controversy, on faith imbued women of remarkable impact.

The 2003 focus is on women working in government or other public service and
is the second phase of a three-year emphasis on faith informed work. In 2002,
the emphasis was on faithful women working in business, finance or economics.
In 2004, science, technology or engineering involvement will be highlighted.
