ABCUSA: Edith Calvin, Former Special Service Worker, Dies

American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 4/22/03)--Edith Calvin,
former American Baptist International Ministries special service worker in
Japan, died April 12.  She was 89. 

An educator, Calvin was a staff member of the New York State Laboratory
School for 15 years, teaching kindergarten and first grade.  She was honored
by the Penn Yan (N.Y.) Central School District as "Teacher of the Year" and
by Keuka College with its first annual "Alumnae Award for Lay Service
through the Church."  

Calvin took early retirement from public school teaching to serve as a
volunteer teacher in Japan.  She was recognized by the American Baptist
Foreign Mission Society as a special service worker in 1971 and assigned to
teach English at the Shokei Girls School.  She also served on the school's
Religious Activities Committee, among other responsibilities. Originally
assigned to Japan for a two-year period, she accepted an invitation to
extend her service until her retirement in 1978.

Calvin later served on the American Baptist Churches USA General Board and
Board of Educational Ministries in the 1980s.
