	Dear LCMSNOTES Subscriber:

LCMS President Gerald B. Kieschnick and his wife, Terry, were
among those invited to the East Room this morning for President George
W. Bush's National Day of Prayer White House prayer breakfast.

In a phone conversation moments ago, President Kieschnick
provided this summary.

Shirley Dobson, chairwoman of the breakfast and wife of Focus on
the Family's Dr. James Dobson, gave introductory remarks and spoke words
of appreciation for President Bush. Both the President and his wife,
Laura, received standing ovations.

In his remarks, President Bush said the American people had
prayed that war with Iraq would not be necessary. Now, he said,
Americans are praying that peace will be lasting. They are praying, too,
he said, for the wounded and for families who lost loved ones in the
war.

According to Dr. Kieschnick, President Bush called the act of
praying for someone else--putting one's own needs aside--"an act of
generosity." Prayer itself, he said, is "an act of humility" because
"the plan of the Almighty is often different from our own."

President Kieschnick said that Washington's National Cathedral
Choir sang beautifully at the breakfast.

After the breakfast, President and Mrs. Bush received and shook
hands with a number of guests, including Dr. and Mrs. Kieschnick. Guests
were then taken to the balcony of the Blue Room to watch President Bush
board his Marine One helicopter for Andrews Air Force Base, from which
he will fly to the West Coast for tonight's speech from the aircraft
carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.

A blessed National Day of Prayer to all of you. Thank you.
