American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 5/6/03)--American
Baptist-related William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., sustained
significant damage to its facilities May 4 as a large tornado system swept
through Missouri, Kansas, Tennessee and Arkansas.

College officials, noting that the school is fully insured, have placed "a
very preliminary estimate" of damages at $15 to $20 million. Among
buildings hardest hit were the John Gano Memorial Chapel, Yates College
Union and Melrose Hall. No students, faculty or staff suffered serious
injuries because of the storm.	Spring semester classes had ended May 2.

Officials at the school say they expect operations there to return to normal
in a very short time.

The May 4 tornadoes claimed at least 38 lives in the four-state area,
including 17 in Missouri.
