	CNH elects Newton
	to succeed Tietjen
	as president

At the LCMS California-Nevada-Hawaii (CNH) District convention
March 28-30 in Modesto, Calif., delegates elected a new district
president, Dr. Robert Newton, on the third ballot.

Newton will be installed June 28 at First Immanuel Lutheran
Church, San Jose, Calif., where he has been senior pastor since 1998. He
succeeds Dr. Walter Tietjen, who is retiring after four terms as
president.

Also elected to their first terms were Rev. Ted Mueller of Santa
Rosa, Calif., first vice president, also on the third ballot; and Rev.
James W. Mueller, of Concord, Calif., secretary.

Rev. Arthur M. Kroeger of Concord, Calif., was re-elected
treasurer.

The convention passed a resolution that affirms Dr. David Benke,
noting in a whereas that the guidelines of Resolution 3-07A were
followed on the occasion of the Yankee Stadium event of September 2001.

Benkes participation in the event has been at the center of a
controversy in the Synod.

Resolution 3-07A of the 2001 Synod convention commends for
continued use and guidance a study and response on church fellowship
issues.

Resolveds of the districts resolution affirm and thank
[Benke] for his efforts to bring the hope of Christ into the public
arena [and] affirm [his] commitment to the adjudication process.

The resolution also affirm[s] and thank[s] Synodical President
Gerald Kieschnick for his leadership in ensuring that the church is
faithful to the Great Commission, its doctrinal and fellowship
commitments, and the expression of charity for one another.

CNH delegates passed a separate resolution affirming Resolution
3-07A.

Noting that there is a large population of followers of Islam
living within the district, another adopted resolution calls for a
mission outreach to Muslims in the district and calls for the district
to ask the 2004 Synod convention to promote such outreach throughout the
church.

The district convention also passed a resolution affirming the
need for lay ministers in the district in situations ... when it is
impractical or impossible for a congregation to call a seminary-trained
pastor. The action calls for continuing to provide appropriate
training for lay ministers, in programs that will meet the needs of
the church.
