Two weeks ago a student in the Health Management College at
Chang Jung Christian University (CJU) (an agency of the
Presbyterian Church in Taiwan) was hospitalized as a suspected
victim of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Her
roommates, classmates and two of her teachers were put under
quarantine. The entire campus was then sprayed with
disinfectant, as a demonstration of the school's commitment to
public health.
University President Hsiao Lung-seng dismissed a recent
rumor that the entire school had been quarantined. "This was a
total fallacy. There was no such notice from the county health
department after the public health and hospital management
departments' first year teachers and students went into
quarantine. The classes that were cancelled and the limited
quarantine on those few students and teachers fulfilled what was
asked of us."
Dr. Hsiao emphasizes that the school has complied with all
regulations and orders of the relevant health and education
authorities, and asks that students and their families rest
assured that the school's 8,000 students and 400 faculty are
safe.
