	South Dakota re-elects Schindler

Rev. Vernon L. Schindler was re-elected to his second full term
as president of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod's South Dakota
District at the district's 56th convention, May 5-7 in Sioux Falls.
Schindler, 62, was re elected on the third ballot. He has served in the
position since 1998, when then-President Raymond Hartwig was elected
secretary of the Missouri Synod.

Also re-elected were Rev. Dale L. Sattgast, Huron, first vice
president, and Rev. Gene Bauman, Spearfish, second vice president.

Among resolutions adopted, delegates voted to:

	* encourage the formation of a district lay leadership institute
that would train lay people to assist pastors.

	* instruct the Pastors Conference to discuss unity among
neighboring congregations and report their findings to the next district
convention in 2006.

	* ask nominees for the position of district president to submit
statements about their vision for ministry in the district for
publication in the convention workbook.

	* make recruitment and retention of church workers a concern of
the entire church through support of the "What a Way" campaign.

	* guarantee financial aid for seminarians when district
congregations cannot afford to pay the portion requested by LCMS
seminaries.

	* continue support for LCMS mission work in Kazakhstan. The
convention also asked that an effort be made to translate the "Book of
Concord" into Kazak.

Rev. Robert Roegner, executive director of LCMS World Mission,
served as convention essayist. Roegner shared mission challenges and
said that partnerships among various mission entities can help the Synod
accomplish its goal of sharing Christ with 100 million unchurched and
uncommitted people within the next 15 years. Delegates affirmed their
commitment to that goal in a subsequent resolution.

Preaching at the convention's opening service was Synod
President Gerald Kieschnick, who emphasized his "One Mission, One
Message, One People" vision for the church body.

Dr. Wallace Schulz of Pacific, Mo., who served as preacher
during the installation service for district officers, was honored with
a plaque for his "faithful service to the Lord and His church." Schulz,
the Synod's second vice president, also serves the Lutheran Heritage
Foundation. He is a former member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Dimock,
S.D.
