Nominees sought for energy panel

Group will update policy adopted by General Assembly in 1981

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - The Presbyterian Church (USA) Advisory Committee on Social
Witness Policy (ACSWP) is seeking nominations for a committee charged with
revising the denomination's policy on energy.

The ACSWP panel is being created in response to last year's General Assembly
approval of an overture from Susquehanna Valley Presbytery calling for a
updating of a 1981 policy statement.

The overture asks that revisions be made "in the light of the current
national and international concern over energy production, consumption, cost,
patterns of distribution, and energy security."

The 1981 policy focused on conservation. In the 22 years since, the
Susquehanna Valley overture pointed out, U.S. energy consumption has
increased and new evidence has come to light about global warming, energy
shortages and related economic and political problems.

The deadline for nominations is June 15.

For more information, contact the Rev. Belinda Curry of the ACSWP staff, by
phone at (888) 728-7228, ext. 5813, or by email at bcurry@ctr.pcusa.org.
