Tarheel to be interim chief of Louisville seminary

Rev. John W. Kuykendall is a former president of Davidson College

by Evan Silverstein

LOUISVILLE - A former college president from North Carolina has been named
interim president of the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary (LPTS)
here.

The Rev. John W. Kuykendall, of Davidson, NC, will assume the president's
duties on Aug. 1 and will serve while a 13-member search committee seeks a
new leader for the 230-student Louisville seminary founded in 1853.

Kuykendall served for 13 years as president of Presbyterian-related Davidson
College, where he also was a professor of religion.

LPTS announced his selection on May 9.

"We are blessed that John Kuykendall has answered our call to the interim
presidency," said Milton J. Coalter, who has been the seminary's acting
president since the resignation last fall of the Rev. John M. Mulder. "He has
all the qualifications for the presidency of a theological seminary and then
some."

Kuykendall graduated from Davidson College in 1959 and began his academic
career as its assistant director of alumni and public relations. He later
earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary and
Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, VA; a Master of
Sacred Theology degree from Yale University Divinity School in New Haven, CT;
and Master of Arts and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton University in Princeton,
NJ.

After ordination as a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), Kuykendall
served as an associate pastor of First Presbyterian Church, of Auburn, AL,
and as a campus pastor at Auburn University. He was an associate professor at
Auburn for nine years and became chairman of its religion department.

Kuykendall has served on a number of educational boards including the North
Carolina Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the
Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities, LPTS, Union-PSCE
Seminary and Presbyterian-related Warren Wilson College in Asheville, NC.

He also has served on a number of presbytery and synod committees, and has
worked as a supply pastor and Sunday school teacher in his home congregation
at Davidson Presbyterian Church.
