New curriculum inspires belief

We Believe appears to be just what the (Presbyterian) doctor ordered

by Nancy Rodman

DENVER, May 25 We believe in We Believe is the message from Sandra Sorem
and Scott Dowd of Congregational Ministries Publishing about the Presbyterian
Church (USA)s new curriculum.

We feel very good about whats happening with the curriculum, Sorem
said. It was completed on time, and we have had very positive feedback from
field tests.

Weve been very responsible in the way the curriculum was created,
Dowd added. There will be continual field testing every quarter. Comments on
the fall quarter will result in tweaking of the spring quarter. Weve added
elements to make it easier for teachers to use.

We Believe was developed in response to a mandate from the 214th
General Assembly (2002) for an accessible Presbyterian curriculum. To help
keep costs down for congregations, We Believe includes reproducible pages.
Based on the confessions and constitution of the Presbyterian Church (USA),
We Believe is primarily a Bible study.	It follows a scope and sequence of
Bible tales, the first year (2003-2004), being devoted to people who tell
Gods salvation story. Its about people fulfilling their baptismal,
ordination, and membership vows, said Sorem. It is Bible study, it is
accessible, and it is teachable and easy to use.

We Believes intergenerational summer materials will focus on mission
interpretation and will make use of the Childrens Mission Yearbook.
Christs Command: Go into the World is the theme for first summer quarter
for use in 2004. It was written by Linda LeBron, immediate past president of
the Association of Presbyterian Christian Educators.

Younger youth, those from grades 6 to 8, will use Bible survey
courses.

The adult study series will depend on books of the Foundations of
Christian Faith series, beginning with Michael Lindvalls The Christian Life:
A Geography of God. Each book will have a 6-to-8 week study guide.

We Believe, written by and for Presbyterians, is the latest step in
the Presbyterian Churchs long journey in education, according to Dowd.
