Boulder potter fashioned unique Communion ware

by Vicki Fogel Mykles

DENVER, May 26 - The sight of hundreds of chalices sitting on the Communion
table during this year's Assembly-opening Sunday Celebration often evoked the
question, "Where did all these chalices come from?"

Custom-made chalices are traditionally provided for each of the
annual PC(USA) General Assemblies. Accordingly, Denver's Committee on Local
Arrangements (COLA) commissioned potter Sandy Pond to throw more than 350
custom Communion cups, a full Communion set - chalice, paten, and pitcher -
and a Baptismal font for the 215th Assembly. Pond, a member of the Boulder
Potter's Guild, has fashioned ecclesiastical ceramic ware for churches
throughout the world.

This year's chalices were passed among more than 6,000 worshipers
during Sunday's Communion service.

COLA member Jo Culbertson said, "These chalices are as unique as each
Presbyterian."

The custom-made cups were thrown with Colorado clay and glazed in
varying shades of blue and gold. Each chalice was intentionally fashioned
with a wide rim for intinction, a tall stem for passing from hand to hand,
and a sturdy, non-tip foot. Pond developed a half-dozen prototypes of the cup
before the final design was selected.

One chalice from this year's Assembly will join the growing display
of Communion cups at the General Assembly offices in Louisville, KY. Chalices
are available for purchase (for $35 each) at the Cokesbury Bookstore in the
Exhibit Hall or at the Volunteer Check-In Desk. Orders for full Communion
sets ($125) may be placed with Jo Culbertson by email at joculdes@aol.com.
