Pittsburgh clerk is first recipient of Jenkins Award

by Sharon Youngs
Communication coordinator, OGA

DENVER, May 27 - Marianne Wolfe has been awarded the inaugural C. Fred
Jenkins Constitutional Services Award for a person or group that has given
wise, prudent, and vigilant support to the constitution and polity of the
Presbyterian Church (USA).

"Wondrous!" she replied. "If this honors those with whom I've worked, I'll be
very happy."

Wolfe received the award during the General Assembly Middle Governing
Body Staff dinner Monday evening.

The award is given by the Association of Stated Clerks of the PC(USA)
in honor of the late C. Fred Jenkins, who served as an associate stated clerk
of the GA for 11 years before his unexpected death in 2000.

Wolfe, the stated clerk of Pittsburgh Presbytery for many years, has
served on nine Assembly committees and task forces.

"The clerk is the fulcrum on which ardor and order rest - where
Ezekiel's dry bones and the breath of the Spirit meet," she said in a later
interview. She spoke of the church as a stained-glass window, saying: "Each
of us becomes a facet of the window when we meet Jesus Christ. When we put
all of the facets together, we come the closest to having God's truth for us.
Our polity is the leading that holds the glass together."

Her advice on polity to PC(USA) clerks: "Know it, teach it, act on
it."

Wolfe and her husband, Tony, live in a retirement community north of
Pittsburgh of which she recently was elected president.

"They may have their own Book of Order when I get through," she said.
