Son recalls writer William Barclay as 'theological middle man'

By Nancy D. Borst

DENVER, May 27 - A son of the late author William Barclay evoked the spirit
of his father with personal stories that brought laughter from an audience of
200 at the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation (PPC) breakfast Tuesday at the
Adam's Mark Hotel.

Ronnie Barclay described his father, the author of 84 books, as a
born storyteller who loved humor. William Barclay also was a world-renowned
professor of divinity and Biblical criticism at Glasgow University in
Scotland who counted "music and arguments" among his hobbies. He is perhaps
best-known for the 17 New Testament commentaries he wrote for the series The
Daily Bible.

Ronnie Barclay said his father was known to "bash away" at his
typewriter, and his colleagues were known to say, "There's Willie Barclay up
in the back, writing another book."

"He called himself the theological middle man. He said he never had
an original thought in his life," Ronnie said. "That's not true."

Barclay "wrote in pictures" and loved to preach on John 12:20-21, in
which some Greek seekers say, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." (NRSV)

"His focus was the man and woman in the pew who wanted to know more
about Jesus," the younger Barclay said.

William Barclay died in 1978 at age 70.

Each participant in the breakfast meeting received a Pew Edition
Sampler of "Sing the Faith - New Hymns for Presbyterians," and brief reviews
of several new PPC books.
