Committee would permit theological task force to meet behind close doors

by Jane Hines

DENVER, May 27 - The Theological Issues and Institutions Committee will ask
the 215th General Assembly to approve an amended version of Overture 03-26,
from San Gabriel Presbytery, to make the Theological Task Force on Peace,
Unity and Purity of the Presbyterian Church (USA) exempt from the church's
open-meeting policy.

The measure, as amended, said the task force "shall be exempt from this
open-meeting policy solely for the purpose of exchanging views on sensitive
theological issues in cases where it is determined by two-thirds vote of the
members of the task force present in a duly called and constituted meeting."

In another matter, the committee responded to Overture 03-20, from
San Diego Presbytery, by voting to ask the Assembly to reaffirm "Hope in the
Lord Jesus Christ," a document on Christ and salvation prepared by the
PC(USA) Office of Theology and Worship, and to commend it to presbyteries and
congregations for study.
