Interim-ministry group honors synod executive

LPTS unveils new program to 're-tool' ministers for interim service

by Jerry L. Van Marter

DENVER, May 27 - During a spirited luncheon marred by a persistent false fire
alarm, the Association of Presbyterian Interim Ministry Specialists presented
its Judicatory Practitioner of the Year Award for 2003 to the Rev. Carol M.
McDonald, a co-executive of the Synod of Lincoln Trails and a tireless
advocate of interim ministry as a specialized calling.

The first-ever Interim Ministry Luncheon also was stirred by an
announcement by the Rev. David Sawyer, a professor of ministry at Louisville
Presbyterian Theological Seminary (LPTS), that the institution will soon
begin offering a Doctor of Ministry degree in interim ministry.

Sawyer, who also is LPTS's director of graduate studies, continuing
and lay education, outlined a three-part plan to revitalize interim ministry
in the Presbyterian Church (USA): develop a new model of interim ministry to
replace the managerial and systems approaches that have dominated for 30
years; renew an emphasis on recruiting and training specifically for interim
ministry; and conduct research to learn which congregational circumstances
best lend themselves to interim ministry

Sawyer said the PC(USA) needs to rediscover interim leaders who are
"sages," ministers with "wise discernment to guide family and community in
dreaming and interpreting dreams" - a model of leadership with rich roots in
the Old Testament, he said.

He said the new D.Min. program at LPTS will "re-tool" ministers for
such a role.
