Abu-Akel goes out in a blaze of honors

by Jerry L. Van Marter

DENVER, May 28 - As he wrapped up his service as moderator of the 214th
General Assembly, the Rev. Fahed Abu-Akel received two signal honors.

During the annual dinner of the National Middle Eastern Presbyterian
Caucus, he learned that the group has established the Rev. Fahed Abu-Akel
award in his honor.

The award, to be presented annually, will honor "a person of Middle
Eastern descent who demonstrates a faithful commitment and witness in the
service of Jesus Christ to the church and the community, promotes cultural
understanding and inclusiveness, and exhibits a leadership role in the
Presbyterian Church (USA)."

On May 25, Abu-Akel was the recipient of the Hugh M. Jenkins Award
for Excellence in Community Programming of the Association of International
Educators. He was cited for "outstanding leadership in bringing together
Americans and internationals in the city of Atlanta."

Abu-Akel, the founder and director of a ministry of hospitality to
more than 5,500 international students attending the 22 colleges and
universities in metropolitan Atlanta, said his ministry is demonstration that
"mission is at our doorstep."

A half-century ago, he pointed out, only about 35,000 foreign
students were in the United States. Today there are more than 500,000, from
180 countries.

"I challenge all Christians to extend your hand of friendship and
hospitality in the name of Jesus in your own communities while these students
are studying in your midst," he said.
