Speaker at Presbyterian Men's Luncheon eschews talk

by Nancy Rodman

DENVER, May 29 - During a week filled with talk, writer Lyman Coleman,
appearing at the annual Assembly luncheon of Presbyterian Men, chose to
demonstrate small-group ministry rather than deliver a speech about it.

Coleman led his listeners through a series of exercises designed to
give them a sense of what a men's discussion group can be and a set of tools
for starting small-group discussions in their own churches. Small-group
ministry, he said, gives participants the feeling of being in a safe place,
and an understanding of the theology of grace.

The organization, formally the National Council of Presbyterian Men
Inc., named the Rev. Fahed Abu-Akel, moderator of last year's 214th General
Assembly, its Churchman of the Year.

Presbyterian Men recently launched a major fund-raising campaign,
"Serving Christ 24/7/365," with the goal of becoming financially
self-sufficient. It hopes to hire staff and open a national office in
Louisville.
