Science group hears from genetics researcher

by Emett Barfield

DENVER, May 29 - Kenneth W. Culver, M.D., a pediatrician and genetics
researcher, was the featured speaker at Thursday's annual Assembly luncheon
of the Presbyterian Association on Science, Technology and the Christian
Faith.

Culver spoke about his sense of call to become a doctor and then to
move into the field of genetics, which he said is "invading every aspect of
life."

"Understanding the genetic basis of disease will enable new
diagnostic, therapeutic and prevention methodologies," he said. He concluded
with a quote from Jeremiah: "Call on me and I will answer you, and tell great
and hidden things which you have not known."

Derek L. Pursey, president of the association, reminded those present
of its two-fold mission: to present issues of science and technology for
integration into the life of the church; and to present issues of Reformed
theology for integration into the lives of Presbyterian scientists and
technical professionals.

The association presented a certificate honoring the late Frank
Vandegrift, a long-time missionary to the Congo who was also involved in
engineering education, to his widow, Catherine Vandegrift.

David W. Talmadge, M.D., an immunologist, was recognized for the
exceptional way in which he integrates his faith and his profession.
