WMD guests speak about human-rights struggles

by Bill Lancaster

DENVER, May 29 - The Worldwide Ministries Division (WMD) of the General
Assembly Council (GAC) marked the 25th anniversary of the Brazilian
Presbyterian church, Igreja Presbiteriana Unida do Brasil (IPU) during the
WMD's Assembly breakfast Thursday.

One focus of the event was the human-rights struggle in Brazil and
three other countries. The Rev. Vernon Broyles, associate director for social
justice ministries in the National Ministries Division (NMD), presented
several "snapshots" of heroism in the "crucible" of oppression and torture in
Brazil.

Broyles recognized the Rev. Iser Ticio Pacheco, the IPU moderator,
who spoke about the church leaders who opposed an oppressive government and
lost their lives as a result. He expressed appreciation for WMD's support and
said his church prays for an increase in WMD's capacity to contribute to the
fight for human rights.

Will Browne, associate director of ecumenical partnerships of WMD,
called on three other guests, who told moving stories of human-rights
campaigns in their countries: Veeda Javaid, director of the Presbyterian
Education Board in Pakistan; the Rev. Mitri Raheb, a Lutheran pastor from
Bethlehem, Palestine; and the Rev. Silas Ncozana, former general secretary of
the Presbyterian Church of Malawi, Africa.

Among the meeting hosts were the Rev. Marian McClure, the WMD
director, and Winnie Drape, chair of the GAC's WMD Committee.
