	Black Ministry cancels convocation

	The LCMS Board for Black Ministry Services has canceled this
years Black Ministry Family Convocation, scheduled for July 2-6 in
Memphis.

	Board members discussed their concerns about the convocation in
a May 19 conference call and made the decision that day. Top among those
concerns was the low registration -- as of May 16, fewer than 60 people
were registered for the event, which typically involves 1,000 or more.

	The convocation costs close to $225,000, according to Dr.
Phillip A. Campbell, interim executive director of the Board for Black
Ministry Services, and board members considered the cancellation a wise
stewardship decision, he said.

	The board is attributing the lack of registrations to the
sagging economy, and Campbell said he believes several hundred people
may have been planning to register closer to the event. But the board
had commitments and deadlines we had to meet for sponsoring the
convocation, so the decision to cancel was made, he said.

	Campbell said the board is looking for a large turnout at the
next convocation, July 7-11, 2004, in St. Louis. He is asking the
Synods Black-ministry leaders to plan rallies in their communities to
encourage early registration. Campbell also is working on a plan to make
future convocations self supporting.
